Pontederia cordata


Emergent aquatic plant growing 2 to 3 feet tall. Found in calm, shallow water areas such as pond margins, marshes and ditches. Often forms large colonies. Attractive violet-blue flowers in summer provide excellent nectar and pollen for insects. The seeds and leaves are eaten by waterfowl, and the leaves are eaten by deer and muskrats. Full to partial sun. Shallow water to wet mucky soil.
