(Shrubby Fivefingers)

Grows 2 to 6 inches. Spreading evergreen groundcover found on rocky mountain tops. White blooms late May to early June. Foliage turns burgundy-deep red in fall. Durable. 2004 Cary Award winner. Full to partial sun. Acidic, well drained soil.

Perennial herb in the sedge family producing dense stands of narrow, tube-like culms reaching 4 to 8 feet. Grows from a long rhizome system. This sedge can be found throughout the world, growing in many types of moist and wet habitat, and sometimes in shallow water. Full or partial sun. Wet soils.

Little Blue Stem

18 to 24 inch warm season grass with fine-textured foliage that forms dense clumps reaching 1 foot wide. Blooms July through September. Red, blue and occasionally yellow stems with white seed tufts reaching 3 feet in the fall. Full sun. Well drained soil.

Red Elderberry

Grows 6 to 12 feet with similar spread. Creamy white blooms in early spring provide early nectar/pollen for insects. Showy red fruit in midsummer is eaten by birds. North American variant of the circumboreal  S. racesmosa. Huge pinnate leaves give a tropical effect. Will tolerate less than ideal site conditions. Sun to light shade. Moist to dry soil.

Elderberry

Grows to 10+ feet with a similar spread. Rapid growing, multi-stemmed  shrub with large pinnate leaves. Large clusters of white flowers in early summer are followed by dark purple-black fruits. Found in rich lowlands, thickets, along streams and roadsides. Great for birds and deer browse. Berries traditionally used for jam and medicine. Sun to light shade.  Moist to wet soil.

Grows 45 to 65 feet. Open crowned tree often with several trunks growing out from the base. Found in wet soil along streams and at the margins of ponds, lakes and fresh-water tidal rivers. Long, narrow and tapering leaves on yellow-green twigs. Full sun. Wet to moist soil.

Grows from 5 to 10 feet with equal spread.  An erect, branching shrub with large,  maple-shaped leaves. 2 inch showy, fragrant, pink to purple flowers in early summer followed by red fruit. Found in rocky wood-openings, road sides and along stone walls. Sun to shade. Moist soil.
